Upcoming singer and songwriter, Vannel, has elevated Afro-Pop in Zimbabwe to the next level following the release of his debut album titled 'POPSTAR' over the weekend.
In an interview, the Afro-Pop maestro spoke on how the project been in the works for almost 3 years now and gave a glimpse of what the album is about and how it is a culmination of dedication, collaboration, and a bold exploration of diverse musical genres.
“For the past 3 years I’ve set up myself to create a project that could articulate my artistry, life, experiences, intentions and how I observe others and this masterpiece is called POPSTAR"
“I have done a lot of collaborations with some of the most talented artists including Nutty O, Alexio Kawara, Pauline, Ad Terry (Nigerian artist), K Chaps amongst others"
“As for my songs, I have done Dovi Mutsunga which remains a highlight of my art, Usawara, Ndigare ndega, Mukwava and others”, said Vannel.
The artist stands on the brink of discovery, as he has taken up the challenge of infusing Afro-Pop with Funk to create a unique sound which he lovingly calls Afro-Funk.
“My sound is an Afro-Funk type of sound, I have often enjoyed 80’s funk coming from Michael Jackson and many others and most people who listen to my music assume that I listen to ‘The Weekend’ of which I don’t, which affirms the ingenuity of my craft and I love that"
"I chose this 80’s funk because I really wanted to bring out the soulfulness of local people as well remind the younger generation, of a sound that might have gone extinct”, said Vannel.
He gave his final sentiments, mentioning how he is optimistic about the growth of the Zimbabwean music industry and how he sees opportunities while others might see obstacles.
“As for the Zimbabwean music industry and talent, I truly believe we’re blessed as a nation and I experience a lot of local talent each and every day and I pray that companies and organizations with the capacity to uplift great talent should stand with upcoming talents more"
“As an aspiring artist, I do not believe I have challenges but rather opportunities to do greater and conquer greater and bigger territories that others are yet to explore and I have chosen to embrace every gift and challenge that life throws at me”, said Vannel.
